アマゾン、MS、ヤフーがGoogleブック検索に反対する団体を発足へ
しかしこうした動きに反対すべく、Open Book Alliance（OBA）なる団体が新しく発足しようとしています。中心となるのは非営利団体Internet Archive。ご存知、若気の至り掘り起こしサービス Wayback Machine を運営している団体ですが、ほかにも50万冊以上の本をデジタル化して無償で公開しています。OBAにはマイクロソフト、ヤフーという巨大企業の参加も確定。アマゾンも参加の見込みと、さながらGoogle包囲網の様相になっています。
公明正大で知られるGoogleですのでブック検索八分などは当然起きえないはずですが、いったいなにを問題視しているのでしょうか。BBCの取材からコメントを拾いあげてみると、Internet Archive創始者 Brewster Kahle氏いわく「Googleは図書館システムを独占しようとしています」「オープンなアクセス方法、図書館への公的支援、多様な組織構造対応、多様で変更される所有者対応、再販売、リパッケージなど私達の築いてきた手法が、Googleのやり方では失なわれています」。同じくInternet ArchiveディレクターのPeter Brantley氏いわく「もしGoogleのやりかたが承認されたら、彼らは法で認められた独占の下、20世紀の書籍の包括的なコレクションを利用できるようになるでしょう」。
